An Introduction to Buying a Chair

The average desk worker spends approximately 1,900 hours over the course of a year sat on an office chair… therefore, investing in the correct one is pretty essential to both your health and happiness.

Having the correct posture at work has endless benefits. You may not realise it, but not using a supportive chair can cause you more problems than you think, e.g. poor circulation, straining of muscles and most commonly an aching back are all symptoms of not sitting comfortably.

Lower back pain is a problematic issue for office workers. However, choosing the right chair can make a world of difference. The shape of the chair should follow your spine in order to maximise comfort and stop you harming your back. Lumbar support can solve your problems by doing all this for you, whilst also supporting the pelvis and providing balance for the spinal column.

Swivel chairs on wheels aren’t just for office races* – they actually are really important for minimising strains and sprains in your back. When you use a static chair, you end up leaning and twisting to reach for things (phones, pens, coffees) that you can’t get to properly. Let your chair take the strain instead of your back by investing in a good quality set of wheels.

Adjustable chairs are really useful when sat in the office. If you’ve ever found yourself reaching up for your keyboard because your seat is too low, or with your feet off the floor because it’s too high, you should look to get an adjustable seat. Having your feet on the floor enables good blood flow to the legs, and being able to recline can often ease back pain. Don’t recline too far though, or you may fall asleep during that important call!

Ever felt like you’re melting at the office? Either the AC is turned up too high, or your chair has a lack of ventilation. You will always work better when you’re comfortable, so look for an ergonomic chair with a mesh back. The tiny holes in this material allow plenty of ventilation, which makes for a comfortable chair and a cool you!

Choosing the right office chair for you really can be life changing – when you spend so much time in it each day, it can be a game changer to be sat in comfort. It can also have positive long term effects such as preventing injury and fatigue, lowering stress levels and even increasing job satisfaction and productivity.
